(6)Movie Review: Rampage [CBFC: U/A 2018 ‧ Action/Sci-fi ‧ 1h 47m]

The movie "Rampage," is a sci-fi action-adventure film inspired from the 1980s arcade game having the same name. The protagonist Dwayne Johnson (Davis) is a primatologist sharing a special and close bond with a gorilla named George. When there is a failure of a genetic experiment it turns George along with other animals into monster-like creatures. To avoid the Rampage and save George from the infection Davis teams up with Dr. Kate Caldwell (Naomie Harris).

#Plot Summary

The film opens with a disastrous experiment in space, leading to the crash of a spaceship carrying dangerous genetic material. When this material is being brought back to Earth by one of their alive astronauts the space shuttle ends up with a blast that lands the genetic material in various locations across the United States. This is where it infects three different animals: George, a gentle albino gorilla; a wolf named Ralph; and a crocodile named Lizzie. Due to the genetic mutation in their DNA, it causes these animals to grow up to an enormous size and eventually, they develop an aggressive behaviour, creating havoc as they head towards Chicago.

Davis Okoye, a former soldier turned primatologist, discovers that his beloved gorilla George has been affected by the genetic material. As George grows larger and larger in size he becomes more aggressive in nature at the same time. Davis then teams up with Dr. Kate, a genetic engineer who knows the sinister origins of the experiment. Their quest to save George is complicated by Claire Wyden (Malin Åkerman) and her brother Brett Wyden (Jake Lacy), the CEOs of the nefarious corporation Energyne, which is responsible for the genetic experiments.

As the monstrous creatures converge on Chicago, Davis and Kate race against time, with the help of government agent Harvey Russell (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), to find an antidote and prevent further destruction. The film culminates in an epic showdown in the heart of the city, with Davis and George battling against the other mutated animals to save humanity.

#Cinematography and Visual Effects

"Rampage" excels in its visual effects, particularly in the depiction of the giant creatures. The transformation of George, Ralph, and Lizzie into colossal, destructive forces is handled with remarkable detail and realism. The action sequences, especially the climactic battle in Chicago, are thrilling and well-executed, showcasing the scale of the destruction and the ferocity of the creatures.

The film's cinematography effectively captures the intensity and chaos of the rampage, with dynamic camera work and immersive shots. The use of practical effects and CGI blends seamlessly, creating a visually engaging experience for the audience.

#Themes and Messages

While "Rampage" is primarily an action-packed blockbuster, it also touches on themes of friendship, loyalty, and the consequences of unethical scientific experimentation. The bond between Davis and George highlights the importance of empathy and understanding in human-animal relationships. The film also serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of corporate greed and the irresponsible use of technology.

#Final Verdict

"Rampage" delivers exactly what it promises: a fun, action-filled spectacle with larger-than-life creatures and a charismatic lead. Dwayne Johnson's performance, combined with impressive visual effects and thrilling action sequences, makes for an entertaining movie experience. While the plot may be predictable and the character development somewhat limited, the film succeeds in providing an enjoyable and visually stunning ride.

If you're a fan of monster movies or looking for a thrilling, popcorn-worthy film, "Rampage" is worth a watch. Its blend of action, humour, and heart ensures that audiences are kept engaged from start to finish.
